In 1934, Baba Ramrick Singh, the first Indian Railway Agent and the then acting GM of Eastern Bengal Railway(EBR) established a small health unit near Sealdah Railway Station. B.R.Singh Hospital started off with just 36 beds but is now one of the best equipped railway hospitals in India which has specialists in all the departments except orthopaedics which is dealt by the speciality railway hospital at Howrah.

This Hospital is Accredited  to train Post graduate DNB Trainees in sevevn disciplines namely, General medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anaesthesiology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology and Pathology. In every session a total number of 10 trainees are inducted for the course through aptitude test.

Training is also imparted to the house surgeons and interns in all the major disciplines.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is also recognized for MRCOG training.
